I have had these beautiful rultilated quartz tear drops in beautiful shades of grey and pale green for years just waiting for the right inspiration.  These are 2 takes on the same stone.  One is wire wrapped and highlighted with fresh water pearls and a silver chain and is convertible from long to short. The other is combined with mystical heamatite and an organic sterling silver pendant.

It Made a Difference to This One

A beach was covered with starfish that had washed ashore, and a little boy was bent over picking up one after another and throwing them back into the water. 
His mother rushed over and said, 'What are you doing?"  
The little boy replied, "If they don't get back into the ocean they will dry in the sun and die" 
"You can’t possibly throw all these starfish back in. It won’t make a difference." 
To which the little boy says, 'Well, it made a difference to this one.’

This is a lovely adaptation of a tale written by Loren Eisley called The Starfish Thrower.

It reminds us that no matter how small the gesture it can make a big difference to someone and if you add up all those small differences they can be very powerful!  The recent ALS  Ice Bucket Challenge brought this to mind.  One little gesture by each person involved can lead to huge fundraising effort for a traditionally underfunded charity and awareness to a devastating disease, that before this, few knew about.

To continue to raise awareness of this disease I am making a limited edition necklace inspired by this story.

My Love Affair With Turquoise.

I think one of my favourite stones has always been turquoise, whether it is the real deal, African "turquoise" or turquoise dyed howelite there is something about the colour, veining and texture that  always calls to me.  It is almost a neutral in that you can pair it with almost any colour and it will look great.  It looks especially spectacular paired with silver which is my favourite metal.

Last week I had a lunch date down town with a friend and headed to my favourite treasure hunt bead store: Lenus Beads.  They always have rows of un-named semi precious stones that even if they don't have a pedigree I still love and they always seem to inspire. This time I was smitten with these turquoise stones, they are either African turquoise or dyed howelite but either way they sang to me. I sat down right away and made three pieces........

First I paired this gorgeous stone with prehnite, amazonite, labradorite and pyrite in this statement crocheted wirw necklace.  $35

 Then I combined it with large silver plated jump rings in this bold stretch bracelet $30

I loved the look of the bracelet so much I made this beautiful necklace with the same stones and jump rings adding a sparkly silver plated chain. $32

I still have some turquoise left...who knows what it will become!

Just to round things out a bit I pulled out some glass pearls in the colour of the year and created this crocheted necklace....

What do You Think?

I was approached by  Pancreatic Cancer Canada to design some jewelry, possibly a bracelet, to sell on their website to raise funds. Their colour is purple and they asked to have a dove incorporated.  I have designed these 4 pieces so far....would you buy these if they were in the $30 range?

Relay for Life

Thanks to everyone that purchased jewelry from me this year I was able to donate $270 to the Saint Jude Elementary School Cancer Busters Relay for life team!  I do this every year in honour of my former colleague and friend Patrick who was diagnosed with tonsil cancer 5 years ago and who beat the odds and is now cancer free thanks to your donation dollars.
