Organic Enamel Rule Breaking

In jewelry design and creation, as in many art forms, there are a lot of rules. When I see a rule I want to challenge it and see if I can work around it to get the look I want.  There are so many rules when it comes to applying enamel (powdered glass) to metal: you can only enamel pure silver and copper, you can't solder enamelled pieces with out special solder..etc.  I have wanted to add some colour to my pieces with something other than stones but the problem was how to solder the pieces together without ruining the enamel or how to enamel the piece after being soldered without undoing the solder.

Today I threw caution to the wind and enamelled a small copper cup I made and then soldered it to a softly squared ring.......it worked!  I wanted the enamel to be very organic and not completely cover the surface to give some texture.
I am really pleased with the results and will be designing a new line of silver and copper pieces with enamel...stay tuned!

I will be at the Metcalfe Farmers Market tomorrow, Saturday, Sept 3rd from 9-1.

Busy in the Workshop

This summer I have decided to be an occasional vendor at the Metcalfe Farmers Market.  It is a fabulous environment and I have met so many wonderful people but it means I need to constantly keep my inventory well stocked.  It has also allowed me to try out some new mediums and play a little.
This interesting piece came out of a process I am developing using polymer clays and acrylic paints to achieve a weather leather or ceramic look. It is light weight and highlighted buy a copper chain.
These earring were using the same process and are lightweight versatile.

Another unique technique called water casting.  Molten silver is poured into water and the sudden cooling causes organic drop shapes to form.  I use these to make earrings, pendants and adjustable rings like these little beauties.

See you at the market in  a few weeks!

Ancient Artifacts

I have been seeing a lot of fabulous things done with Fimo, an oven baked clay, and since I had some kicking around from an old project I pulled it out and spent an afternoon making these earrings.  I love the look of verdigris so I tried to make them resemble the aged patina.  They are light weight and durable, a fun spring look!
